WELCOME!

PetChiro’s promise is to promote animal wellness through preventative and corrective chiropractic care and owner education. We work to serve all of your pets, large and small in Northumberland County and the Peterborough area.

What is Animal Chiropractic?

Animal chiropractic involves adjustments of joints of the spinal column and extremities that are causing neurological and/or biomechanical problems. It also involves management advice as to what is needed to ensure proper response to chiropractic care, including rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise.

Information from the case history and the examination are combined to determine if chiropractic care is appropriate. A chiropractic adjustment is defined as gentle, quick and controlled thrust by hand that is directed at specific areas of joint irritation or dysfunction to restore normal joint motion.

Pets feel their best when they are free to move and play. Chiropractic care helps pets achieve optimal mobility so that they can lead their best life.

Dr. Katy Spiewak

Born and raised in Northumberland County, Dr. Katy Spiewak holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph, and her Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

Dr. Katy grew up with a variety of animals and started riding horses at the age of eight. As a teenager, she competed at many horse trials, was an active member Pony Club and received her B level. As a rider and animal lover from a young age, Dr. Katy always knew she wanted to work with animals.  After chiropractic college in 2007, she completed her animal chiropractic studies (licensed chiropractors and veterinarians are eligible to take the animal chiropractic program). Dr. Katy is certified in animal chiropractic through the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) and is also a member of the Ontario Chiropractic Association, the Canadian Chiropractic Association and the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.

Most commonly, Dr. Katy treats horses, dogs and cats for muscle and joint issues but has also treated ferrets, rabbits, donkeys and even some cockatoos. Dr. Katy treats small animals at All Creatures Great and Small in downtown Cobourg and travels to barns for horses in the Northumberland County and Peterborough area.  She also does house calls for owners who find that their pets are more comfortable in their own home.

Inspired by her animal patients and their owners, Dr. Spiewak created Petxercise in 2011.  Petxercise is a program which provides owners with easy-to-follow exercises to do at home with their pets to keep them strong, fit and mobile.  Her goal is to promote animal wellness through preventative and corrective chiropractic care and owner education.

Dr. Spiewak served as club president of the Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise in 2011-2012.  In her free time, she enjoys yoga, cycle-fit, hiking, baking and spending time with her husband, two sons, dog and cat.

The Petxercise DVD is an easy-to-follow guide created by Dr. Katy Spiewak featuring easy and fun exercises designed to do at home with your dog to help keep them strong, sharp and mobile. Not only do these simple exercises enhance your pet’s quality of life, it’s also a great way to build the bond between you and your dog.

The exercises are geared to increase a dog’s core strength — that is, to strengthen the deep, core muscles in and around the spine. The simple stretches are great for dogs of all ages and sizes: regular stretching helps reduce the risk of injury and helps older dogs with mobility issues. The DVD also includes warm-up tips and cool-down stretches.
